Year 2
Classes
Much of the advice for Year 1 also applies here. For later years, choosing classes, especially Gen-Eds, gets harder. At this point, you should conduct a degree audit. If you aren’t yet able to declare your major, you can do a what-if report instead. What both of these show are the classes that you still need to take. This is specifically important for Gen-Eds as there are different types that you are required to take like art and science. To find classes of a certain type, see the Penn State Gen Ed bulletin.
Internships
Internships are difficult to get, but feasible as a sophomore. Specifically, apply to Nittany AI’s advance program. This is a great paid internship to help give Penn State students on-the-job experience and build their resume. This year, put some work into preparing for the Technical Interview [Insert Link]. This is the first step for most Computer Science job applications, so it is where most applicants fail.
Projects
By this point you should have completed some of your core computer science classes and have enough programming experience to complete some basic project. They don’t have to be great, but you should try to get two projects on your resume. You should move past basic scripts and try to create a larger comprehensive project like a decent website, a non-trivial game, or something with AI.
